Moody Blues: How to Wear One of The Hottest Fall Colors

If you’re feeling blue this fall, consider it a good thing. Cobalts, teals, ceruleans and royal blues reigned supreme on the autumn/winter catwalks.  The varying levels of blue this season are striking, opulent and incredibly chic.  For a quick rundown on how to take the trend from the runway to your closet, here’s a guide on the top four shades of blue we fell in love with this collection season.

Royal Blue – Perhaps the most glamorous tone on the color wheel, royal blue dominated the catwalks of Stella McCartney, Chanel, John Galliano and Prabal Gurung. The clever mixing of blue and black was a stunning contrast to otherwise basic wardrobe staples, such as pencil skirts, blazers and fitted trousers.

Teal – Long ago, we used to have a thing for teal and then, it got a bad rap. But this fall, designers took teal out of the nineties and spun the rich hue into a more modernized version using a variety of fabrics to showcase the deep, inky undertone of the once beloved color.  Playing up the romance factor, teal was shown in draped satin gowns, velvet trousers, plush cashmere car coats and jeweled chiffon cocktail dresses.

Cobalt – It’s safe to say cobalt blue packs quite a punch whenever it’s worn.  The vibrant shade is an excellent choice against the backdrop of the darker, duller colors of fall. If you want to try out the cobalt trend, opt for colored jeans, school-girl inspired satchels, cashmere sweater dresses or textured nubby knits.

Cerulean – You might remember the infamous scene in The Devil Wears Prada where Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, blasts the lowly Andie Sachs about her description of “this stuff”. Well, cerulean was the star of that conversation then and it’s back again to prove it has staying power. This time around it was presented on a monochromatic platform, delivered in sportswear and intermixed into vintage brocade prints.

What’s your favorite shade of blue?
